Although a combination of short memories and clickbait bombast can produce a statistically impossible number of "most" and "best" proclamations around videogames, I'm not exaggerating when I say that Grim Fandango has the snappiest, smartest, funniest dialogue I've seen in any game, ever, before or since. By the time I was in my late teens, as far as I was concerned adventure games had always been the most important and impressive genre of computer games, and they always would be.įirst, the good news: Even now, there's a lot to praise about Grim Fandango, and praise effusively. As I got older, adventure games only got better their graphics, stories and puzzles became more sophisticated, their worlds more immersive. I came of age in the era of adventure games some of my earliest memories involve sitting a keyboard and typing commands like "look at frog" into the text parsers of Sierra games. It's a bit of an understatement to say I adored Grim Fandango. Schafer's current company, Double Fine Productions, has resurrected Grim Fandango over 16 years after its original release, with updated graphics, better lighting, and a highly enjoyable director's commentary.

Which is the catalyst to the whole riddle.A slick, brilliantly-scripted fusion of Day of the Dead mythology and hard-boiled noir, Grim Fandango was directed and scripted by Tim Schafer, the man who also helped give us The Secret of Monkey Island, Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle and more recently, Broken Age. None of this is in the game - so it becomes a question of chance to recognize the plate. There is a conversation with the track owner that takes place that alludes you to the blimp being directly connected to the stuffed cat, but that one is only available after you've solved the ticket printing puzzle - so wtf?Īlso - on the photo there is Olivias name on the blimp, but confronting Oliva with the photo just gets you stock answers.Įssentially, this puzzle is implemented very badly.Įither make the plaque more obvious (I would have gotten it from there), or make the second counter window more obvious, or let the conversation with the track owner trigger earlier, or give Olivia a response to the photo. Did already make the connection with the ticket printer, followed the false lead to input 06 race 06 week, and cycled thorugh all the days, because I had no idea whatsoever that any of the other information pieces are hidden on the track. So essentially I was left with the information on the photo. The next part that prevented me from piecing it together was that the second window (counter) which provides you with the information regarding the cat hat day has no indication whatsoever, that you would be able to interact with that part of the environment. The line above should be the only hint you need.) (Dont read on, if you havent solved the puzzle yet. So essentially I didn't know that there was a piece of information available.

My problem was, that although I tried looking at the plaque below the giant cat two seperate times (one steping the character) I didn't manage to focus in on it. I must admit, I got stumped by this puzzle just yesterday and sadly have turned to UHS (which isnt especially subtle at providing you the solution) to get past it.
